When she finished speaking, Beam nodded. He took a final drag on his cigarette and then stubbed it out in an empty tin can that once held tuna. Ferron waited expectantly.

“Kloos is not an easy man to talk to,” Beam said finally, in his rough voice. “If we find him, what makes you think he’ll see you?”

“Someone is trying to kill the man. I may be able to help save him.”

The young woman frowned. “A lot of people have tried to kill my father. What’s one more?” Her voice was angry.

It took Ferron a moment to realize what she’d said. “You’re his daughter?”

“I’m Kristine Kloos.”

“But you’re too young.”

“I’m twenty-seven,” she said brusquely. “My father was in his late forties when I was born. He divorced my mother when I was seven. I’ve seen him maybe five times since.”

“Do you know where he is? I must see him.”

She snorted. “The last I heard his plane was shot down in the jungle.”

He was surprised at her lack of concern. “There are rumors he’s still alive.”

Kristine merely stared at him, no emotion in her eyes, which were now opaque. Ferron turned to Beam. “I’d like to hire the Flora to take me upriver to Kloos’s plantation at Tafelberg.”

Kristine said, “My father doesn’t have a plantation at Tafelberg. He has a fortress in the mountains there and plantations along the river. You can fly to Tafelberg if you wish.”

“Is that where you think he is?”

She shrugged. “My father could be anywhere. He can take care of himself.”

He rubbed his cheeks tiredly. “Maybe so,” he said, “but I need to see him about my grandfather—and about another man they both knew in the war—an Italian named Beppe Aprico. Aprico and my grandfather were murdered and I think your father knows who did it. I’d like to check his plantations along the river to see if he’s hiding in one of them.”

A Bush Negro stuck his head in the door, said “D’ u lai boto,“ and left.

“Everything’s loaded,” Kristine said.

Beam nodded and turned back to Ferron, pointing at his bare feet. “What happened to your shoes?” A crooked grin creased his face. “You take a late night swim, buddy?”

“Someone tried to kill me tonight.”
